See and be seen

As part to better assess the situation on the road in the dark (see) and about the passive safety (be seen), one can consider to replace the standard halogen lamps of your motocycle with a HID Xenon conversion kit.

On this and the following pages you'll find information about what is Xenon, what are the advantages, what types are available, how do I build this in my bike...

H.I.D. Xenon lighting technology

Xenon lighting is also called HID lights. HID stands for High Intensity Discharge and gives the main principle behind the how it works. It refers to lighting technology that relies on an electrical charge to ignite xenon gas contained in a sealed bulb.

One great advantage of HID lighting is that it doesn't have a filament but instead creates light by igniting an arc between two electrodes. In short, it means that the Xenon gas in a tube is light because the electrons in this gas receives a large (23,000 volts!) electrical tension. This indicates immediately that we will need something extra, namely a ballast (see below). Compared to a halogen lamp, the light from xenon gas more visible. This also means that the light output of a Xenon lamp is very large. Compared to a halogen lamp, the Xenon lamp emits to three times more light.

Moreover, the energy consumption of a Xenon lamp is lower (typically 35W compared to a 55W halogen lamp or a 36% savings). Which means that less heat is being produced and the lamp lasts much longer. Also, the lamp is less vulnerable to shocks in the absence of a filament, so they lasts again much longer. In order to have a higher light output, the pressure inside the light bulb of a Xenon lamp is higher than within a halogen lamp .

H.I.D. Xenon conversion kit

The H.I.D. conversion kit consists of a compact digital ballast with an associated Xenon lamp type and wiring harness, where the type of Xenon lamp depends on the type your motorcycle model (see menu BMW bikes).

The HID conversion kit is a true bulb specific plug and play kit, which fits directly into the headlight housing with no need to cut stock headlight wiring. Installation simply requires connection of the wiring harness to the stock headlight to the bulb's harness and then connecting the wiring harness from the bulb to the HID ballast. The HID bulb then installs back into the headlight housing.

We use a compact digital ballast.

Some of the advantages are:

- compact = requires less installation space, which is certainly beneficial to install it in motorcycles
- digital = faster ignition, more stable and more perfect light control up to 35W
- CAN-bus compatible = no error on your display
- 24 months of warranty = professional quality!

There are several types of xenon lamps available. Depending on the halogen lamp used in your motorcycle, you can replace it with a similar Xenon type. You can check the section "BMW bikes" to determine what type of lamp is used in your motorcycle model.

The H.I.D. conversion kit (lamp and ballast) are tested before they are sent to make sure they operate well.

Summary

Applying a H.I.D. Xenon conversion kit for your bike gives a number of advantages.

In terms of safety:

- SEE and BE SEEN, this at night or day!
- Xenon lamps of 4300K give a bright white light, which strongly approache normal daylight.
- 3 times more light than a standard halogen light.
- Faster seeing the dangers.
- Better reflection of road signs and road markings.
- longer and wider light cone.

On a technical level:

- Compact ballast requires less installation place, which is advantageous for installation in motor bikes.
- Digital ballast provides a faster and more stable ignition light.
- More than 35% less energy consumption, making the alternator and battery is charged less.
- Seven times longer lamp life (no filament + less heat).
- Better environment for lamp housing and reflector because less heat is generated.
- Plug-n-play system where the original electrical connection is used.
- CAN-bus compatible so that no error message is generated on your display.
- 24 months of warranty on the ballast due to the professional quality!
- Waterproof, shock resistant and high quality cabling.
- The Xenon HID conversion kit includes lamp, ballast and wiring harness.
